Palm Springs Aerial Tramway closed indefinitely, causing Splash House set cancellation

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway was closed starting Friday due to unexpected technical issues with its electronic system, with officials later saying it will remain closed “at least” through Monday, Aug. 11.

Tramway officials said in a press release Friday that maintenance teams were actively working to resolve the issue and restore service “as quickly and safely as possible.” The facility, a popular method for escaping the desert heat in the summer, remained closed the next day.

In another update Saturday, tramway officials said a confirmed reopening date “remains unknown,” but added they’ll continue to provide updates.

ā€œWe believe we have isolated the issue and are now awaiting delivery of the replacement part,” Tramway Systems Vice President Chris Bartsch said in an emailed statement.

Greg Purdy, vice president of marketing for the tramway, told The Desert Sun that people who’ve already purchased tickets for canceled rides should receive emails offering refunds or opportunities to use them at a later date.

Closure affects Splash House Palm Springs

The closure is particularly pertinent to the few lucky Splash House eventgoers chosen to attend an intimate DJ set by BLOND:ISH aboard the tram Friday night as part of the poolside music festival.

Sara Hartzell of Infamous, the public relations company hired by the festival, told The Desert Sun that the set “won’t be happening anymore.” No other information was provided, and as of 5:15 p.m., the Monday, Aug. 4 Instagram post announcing the special set had not been deleted.
